Can Chelsea find an immediate No.1 upgrade without paying the premium normally attached to a young goalkeeper?
The gap is an established immediate No.1.
Chelsea's goalkeeper question is more specific than simply replacing Robert Sánchez. Sánchez remains a capable Premier League goalkeeper and his underlying 2025/26 numbers were better than some of the criticism suggests. The issue is whether the position is good enough for where Chelsea want to go.
Mike Penders changes the recruitment completely. At 21, 2.00m and already coming off a full Ligue 1 season, Chelsea already own a genuine long-term goalkeeper. That means the priority should not be another expensive development signing. It should be finding someone capable of improving the team immediately without closing Penders' pathway.

The main concern is the jump from Serie B, while Venezia's new deal until 2030 also strengthens their negotiating position.
Target B — Marco Carnesecchi, Atalanta
Carnesecchi is the safer proven option. His 2025/26 Serie A season included a 76% save rate, +7.07 goals prevented, 13 clean sheets and 0 errors leading to goals. The shot stopping and reliability are excellent.
His distribution is less impressive than Stanković's, but he offers stronger top-flight evidence and less projection risk.

The data points most strongly towards Filip Stanković. The strongest argument is not simply his 77.2% save rate, but the combination. He prevented +9.02 goals above expectation while also posting significantly better possession numbers than Sánchez. Chelsea would not simply be trading one goalkeeper strength for another. The profile potentially improves both shot stopping and build-up quality.
At 24, he also fits Chelsea's recruitment model far better than an older short-term solution. The obvious risk is Serie B translation. That should be investigated through video, shot-location analysis, one-v-one performance, cross claiming and pressure data before any decision. Statistically, he has done enough to earn first place.
